In manufacturing, situations may arise where the actual quantity produced is less than what was planned. The Creating Backorder or No Backorder feature provides flexibility in handling such scenarios by enabling businesses to decide whether backorders should be created based on settings in the Bill of Materials (BOM).

This feature checks the configuration in the BOM, specifically whether the "Create Work Orders" option is enabled. If enabled, and the produced quantity is less than expected, a backorder is automatically generated to track the remaining quantity. However, if the configuration indicates "No Backorder," the system will not create additional work orders for the remaining quantity, allowing businesses to close the production process without generating backorders.

Key Benefits:

  1. Configurable Backorder Creation: Allows businesses to decide whether to create backorders based on the BOM configuration.
  2. Flexibility in Manufacturing: Provides flexibility when less than the expected quantity is produced, helping businesses manage production flows more effectively.
  3. Automated Backorder Handling: Automatically creates backorders if enabled, reducing manual intervention in managing production shortages.
  4. Production Efficiency: Allows businesses to avoid unnecessary backorders, streamlining production and closing processes when appropriate.

Example Use Case:

A manufacturing company may produce only 80 units out of a planned 100 units in a single work order. If the Bill of Materials is configured to allow backorders, the system will automatically create a backorder for the remaining 20 units. However, if backorders are disabled in the BOM configuration, the production process will complete without generating a backorder, allowing the company to manage its workflow more efficiently.

Conclusion:

The Creating Backorder or No Backorder feature provides manufacturers with greater control over the backorder creation process in Odoo. By leveraging this feature, businesses can configure their production workflows to either create backorders when needed or streamline the production process by avoiding unnecessary backorders.
